Welcome to the Fifth Annual North Gower Discovery Tour

Only a half-hour drive from downtown Ottawa, the North Gower area is the setting for an autumn tour that lets you escape the "beaten track". Relax and explore the interesting byways shown in this brochure while experiencing the rural charms that await you.

The numbers on the map are for your convenience. Stops may be visited in any order.

  1. Joan Lindsay
    Quilt styles today are as varied as the fabrics used to make them and Joan has chosen to follow the "back to basic" style of her grandmother Alice. Come and visit her workshop and try your hand at English paper piercing.

    Guest : Marta Wood - In the gift shop you will meet Mart and discover WoodHoodz and SuitAbilities. Unique winter accessories designed to help people with respiratory illness and poor circulation cope with cold temperatures.

  2. The North Gower Cheese Factory
    The North Gower Cheese Factory is a small milk processing plant located on the Bollinger Farm. Using their own Grade A Brown Swiss milk, the North Gower Cheese Factory makes fresh cheddar, Swiss style yogurt and fresh cheese curd. A variety of imported cheeses, country style jams, honey, bread, and more, are also available.

  3. Posh Practicals Inc.
    New kitchen products, crafts and supplies, tole painting lessons, Christmas decorations, hand blown glass including "cranberry", some used and antiques furniture, and wood cut to your specifications for tole painting. Gift certificates are available. Tole painting is easy to learn and adds your own personal unique touch to your home. Open year-round by appointment.

  4. Primrose Path Studio & Garden
    "Primrose Path" offers visitors a tantalizing combination of art and gardening pleasures. Veronique Stefanica's new "Naive" paintings in oil pastel and gouache, as well as reproductions and note-cards will be available in the studio. At the same time, take a few minutes to relax and enjoy our gardens in all its fall splendour.

  5. Ann Gruchy
    Watercolor and mixed-media works, mono prints and graphite drawings allow Ann to express light and design. Her detailed forms are shown against the depths ambiguous, negative-space backgrounds. 

    Guest : RiverLights Stained Glassworks specializes in original design work assembled with the unique colours and textures of stained glass.

  6. Indian Trail Carvings
    Keith and Linda Taylor invite you to their stable and workshop where they hope you will experience the magic of the hand-carve carousel house. Keith tries capture the spirit of the horse in many forms, including rocking horses, counterbalanced toys, and many other horse related carvings. Come and share our love of horses - both wooden and real.

  7. Rideau Nursery Cut Flower Farm
    Rideau Nursery is a feat for the senses and a flower lover's dream. Stroll through our display gardens, sit and enjoy a snack in the gazebo, pick your own flowers from the rows in our cutting fields, or visit the Flower Barn for a delightful selection of gardener's gifts amid the wonderful scents of hanging, dried bouquets.

  8. Margaret & Herman Rühland
    Margaret worked in textiles all her life and presently does quilted wall hangings in contemporary and Amish style. Herman designs and builds Japanese style and Canadian stone gardens. He also produces contemporary artwork in oil, tempera and acrylic, making collages, frescoes and found object-art.

  9. Birdworks
    Ken and Diane have a large selection of houses, feeders, toad and butterfly houses. They also have kits for the "do-it-yourselfer"! Crafted on the premises. They have their own special wild birdseed and new indoor budgie seed, at great prices. Cardigans and T-shirts available. Ken will add your personal touch to your purchase. Special orders accepted.

  10. From the Farm
    The Donaldson's beautiful hobby farm is where Jennifer creates all her unique work.  Barn board, pine and cedar are used in her woodworking which has an aged, rustic appeal. Bentwood trellises and arbours, folk art, dried flowers and even fresh vegetables are available. For picnicking, BBQ and drinks will also be for sale.

  11. Laughing Loon
    Peter Clement's shop is stocked with duck and loon carvings, unique stick furniture, pictures & frames, lamps, wreaths & much more. All carvings and handcrafts are fashioned on the premises.

  12. Log House Perennials
    Shelly and Greer invite you to visit their daylily and hosta gardens. You will find a great variety of colours, sizes and scents. Dig your own or choose from those already potted. Garden ornaments are also available. Shelly, a landscape horticulturists and designer, can give planting or landscaping advice.

  13. Country Quilts Workshop
    Gerry Egan opens his country workshop for you to experience the creation of pine reproduction furniture. You will find basic and functional designs warmed by charm and elegance. You will also distinctive character and workmanship in each design. Most of the production is "made to order" so please bring your designs and ideas for furniture in pine and we will be happy to discuss them with you.

  14. The Colonial Inn Fruit Farm
    We grow apples, pears, plums, red and black currants, gooseberries, vegetables and herbs, in season. Maple syrup and our own homemade jam, jellies, pickles and dried herbs are available seven days a week. Various handwork, including cross-stitch, needle point and knitting will be on display and for sale on the Discovery Tour weekend.

Welcome to our 8th season! We are open June 9 - October 13, Saturday mornings 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. Rain or Shine! Start your  morning off with our fund raising pancake breakfast (8:30-11:00) and enjoy a special lunch at the "Market Canteen" (11:00-12:30). Come and enjoy the Market's warm, friendly atmosphere and leave with some fresh local produce, home baking, preserves, and handcrafted items or a fine piece of artwork.
The Market is located 200 meters west of the village on Roger Stevens's drive.
