Don Routly's pen and ink drawings offer a unique and personalized way of portraying things you cherish, whether it is your home, the family pet, vintage cars, tractors, motorcycles, barns, or prized livestock.

"As a youngster," says Don, "I loved to draw and paint, but I got hooked on photography in my early twenties. Capturing true-to-life images on film was a magic that couldn't be matched by any other medium." This focus changed when Don moved from his native Montreal to rural Ontario in 1995.

After moving to the North Gower area, Don was fascinated by the area's abundant flora and fauna, and the charming farms and historic buildings of the area. Don felt that photos could not portray the scenes he saw exactly the way he wanted them; it inspired him to dust off his drawing pens and paint brushes.

Don has produced an impressive number of works, including finely detailed pen and ink drawings of animals, antique farm implements, and a series titled "Old Barns of Rideau Township". Many of his paintings, done mainly in acrylics, feature various wild bird species found in Eastern Ontario.

Don is the resident artist of Stillwoods Craft Shop on Roger Stevens Drive west of North Gower. See the page on Stillwoods Shop, in our feature on local businesses, and visit the shop on Roger Stevens Drive, west of North Gower.
